Loan Repayment Software: Schedules, M-Pesa Collection and Reminders

LendPoint is loan repayment software for Kenyan lenders. It builds each borrower's repayment schedule, collects installments through M-Pesa, reminds borrowers before and after due dates, and charges penalties your way. Every shilling is posted to the general ledger.

Repayment schedules from your loan products

Set the rules once on a loan product and every loan follows them:

  • Interest method: flat rate or reducing balance. Not sure which to use? Read flat rate vs reducing balance interest in Kenya.
  • Frequency: daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly installments, or one lump-sum (bullet) repayment.
  • Fees and penalties: processing fees, late penalties with a grace period, and a cap so penalties can't run away.

The schedule is created when the loan is approved, and the borrower gets an SMS with the amount, total repayable and first due date.

Collecting repayments

ChannelHow it works
M-Pesa PaybillThe borrower pays as usual. The payment arrives through the C2B API and is applied to their loan instantly.
STK pushYou send a prompt for the exact installment. The borrower enters their M-Pesa PIN, with no Paybill or account number to mistype.
USSD and the appBorrowers start a repayment from the USSD menu or the LendPoint mobile app.
Bank and cashKCB payments come in through the bank integration. Staff record cash and other bank payments, and they post to the same ledger.

Partial payments, overpayments and multiple loans

Real borrowers don't pay the exact amount on the exact day, so LendPoint handles the usual cases:

  • A partial payment reduces the oldest unpaid installment, and a larger one clears several.
  • A borrower with more than one loan: if they use the loan number as the Paybill account, the payment goes to that loan. If they use their ID number, it goes to their open loans in the order you choose: newest, oldest or most overdue first.
  • An overpayment can spill over to the borrower's other loans if you switch that on. Whatever is left goes to their wallet.

Reminders that run themselves

LendPoint sends SMS reminders a set number of days before each due date and on the due date itself. If an installment is missed, overdue reminders repeat on the schedule you set until it is paid. Each reminder carries the amount due and how to pay, so borrowers can act on it straight away. Keep reminders within the law: see debt collection rules for lenders in Kenya.

Early settlement, rollovers and waivers

  • Early settlement: get a payoff quote for any date. Choose whether future interest is charged pro rata to that date, up to the next installment, or in full. The loan closes once the quoted amount is paid.
  • Rollover: close a loan and open a new one from its balance, with the link between them kept.
  • Penalty waivers: staff with permission can waive unpaid penalties, and the daily run won't charge them again.
  • Write-offs: record a loan you won't recover, with a reason, in the audit log.

Repayment reports

See every repayment for a period by branch or loan officer. Compare collections with disbursements and read the profit and loss built from the same ledger. Daily, missed and past-maturity collection sheets show what is still to collect. See loan tracking software for more on the sheets.

For lenders anywhere in Kenya

LendPoint is built in Mombasa and runs in the cloud, so it works the same for lenders in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Thika, Machakos, Nyeri, Meru or any other town. Frequently asked questions

What does loan repayment software do?

It builds each borrower's repayment schedule, collects and records payments, applies them to the right installments, reminds borrowers before and after due dates, and charges any penalties your loan product sets. LendPoint does all of this and posts every payment to the general ledger.

Which repayment methods does LendPoint support?

Flat rate and reducing balance interest, repaid in daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly installments, or as one lump sum (a bullet loan), set per loan product. Payments come in through M-Pesa Paybill, STK push, USSD, KCB bank integration or as cash and bank payments recorded by staff.

What happens when a borrower has more than one loan?

If the Paybill account number is the loan reference, the payment goes to that loan. If it is the borrower's ID number, it goes to their open loans in the order you choose in settings: newest, oldest or most overdue first. You can let any overpayment spill over to their other loans, and what is left goes to their wallet.

Can a borrower pay off a loan early?

Yes. LendPoint gives an early settlement quote for any date, with the option to charge interest pro rata, up to the next installment, or in full, and closes the loan once the quoted amount is paid.

Does it send repayment reminders?

Yes. SMS reminders go out a set number of days before the due date and on the due date, and overdue reminders repeat on a schedule you set until the installment is paid.

Can I waive a penalty?

Yes. Staff with the right permission can waive unpaid penalties on a loan, and the daily penalty run will not charge the same penalty again.
